Literary CEOs: Time Management for Busy Home Executives (Moms & Dads) - Episode #18, Segment #4

Unlike so many other time management books that aim to help parents increase their daily efficiency, No Regrets Parenting by Dr. Harley A. Rotbart has struck a chord with readers nationwide because of its emphasis on intimacy.  Rather than teaching parents to organize their child-rearing routines, Dr. Rotbart shows moms and dads creative, easy, even fun methods to optimize their time with their kids.

On this week's final segment, Dr. Rotbart joins co-hosts David Biondo and Dean Rotbart to explain that the most important measure for busy executives is not how much time they allow themselves each day to spend with their children, but rather how they make the time that they do spend special and memorable.

Dr. Rotbart, a professor and vice chairman of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital, has been observing successful parenting techniques – and some not so successful approaches – for three decades.

Literary CEOs: Three Successful Authors Share Their 'Business Plans' - Episode #18, Segment #2

Cathy Langer, head book buyer for the Tattered Cover Bookstore, moderates a panel featuring three success authors in a discussion of the business skills required to be a "Literary CEO."

Joining Cathy in the 710 KNUS AM studios are Nick Arvin, author of The Reconstructionist, and Erin Blakemore, author of The Heroine's Bookshelf.  Also participating by phone from New York is Eli Gottlieb, author of The Face Thief.

As co-hosts David Biondo and Dean Rotbart point out, writing and successfully publishing a book is very much a business - requiring many of the same skills that any successful entrepreneur must master.

Do you have the right product line (subject matter)? How much will it cost to produce (time, lost opportunities, out-of-pocket expenses)? What's your marketing plan (if no one buys the book, then what)? Do you have the self-discipline and dedication to see the project through? What type of team do you need to assemble to get the job done (agent, publisher, PR, editor, etc.)?

This is the second of three related segments.

Literary CEOs: Writing Books is a Challenging Business - Episode #18, Segment #1

Put on your reading glasses and turn up the volume.  On this week's edition of Business Unconventional, we're talking to some "literary CEOs" - also known as authors.

In this, the first of three related segments, Cathy explains the business aspects of merchandising a bookstore and talks about why the Tattered Cover is such a unique and popular destination for book buyers.

Fifth-generation farmer John Wood, founder of U.S. Wellness Meats, and Rich Carr, founder of itsPaleo.com, discuss the popularity and health benefits of grass fed meats.

Wood started out raising animals as his family and neighbors had for many decades.  Eventually, however, he came to understand the special health benefits of the CLA and omega-3s found in free-range meat.  He launched U.S. Wellness Meats to serve consumers who appreciate the higher quality and health benefits of grass fed animals.  His Monticello, Missouri company is now the "Omaha Steaks" of the industry - shipping grass fed beef to satisfied consumers and restaurants throughout the country.

Carr's itsPaleo.com is a booming Internet portal offering a vast array of information, recipes and forums to consumers who've embraced the Paleo Lifestyle Design and those who are interested in learning more about it.  Carr, the founder of interactive marketing and advertising firm, Carr Knowledge, is a regular contributor to Business Unconventional.

Episode #16, Segment #2 - Friends, Partners, Entrepreneurs

Devon Read, Ryan Jordan and Amy Oliveira are the founders of Happy Owl Studio, an innovative maker of stylish and useful accessories for the Apple iPad and iPod.  The threesome not only work together at the office, they're long-time friends.  Reed and Oliveira are engaged.

As Read and Jordan explain on this week's edition of Business Unconventional, very little in their background would forecast the success they've had with their company.  In fact, it was not very long ago that Read, the CEO, was an infantry reservist assigned to the front lines in Iraq.

The path that Read, Jordan and Oliveira have traveled has been neither easy nor conventional. However, their story is a great example of how anyone who dreams big, works smart and commits to success can beat the odds.

Episode #15, Segment #4 - Florist Julia Park and Diz's Daisys - Pre-Valentines Day Edition

Diz's Daisys is a flower shop that serves the greater Denver area from one location in North Denver. It relies on high-touch customer service and word-of-mouth testimonials to rebut the conventional thought that the keys to successful retailing are "location, location, location."

Owner and master florist, Julia Park, filled the 710 KNUS AM studios with floral arrangments from Diz's Daisys as she was interviewed for the special pre-Valentine's Day edition of Business Unconventional. Another common myth that Park dispelled: "A Rose is a Rose."  In fact, Park notes that many roses and other flowers wilt within days of purchase.  She only sells fresh flowers, many of them grown in Colorado, to be certain that her stems last a long, long time.

Also weighing in on Valentine's Day in Segment Four of this week's program is regular contributor Homer Hudson Hillis, Jr., reporting from Abilene, Texas.  Valentine's Day is big business, with many retailers enjoying their best sales of the year.
